Kiev launched a long-awaited counter-offensive on Sunday. The AFU is advancing slowly, while Russian forces are holding out better than anyone expected. There is a reason for this: an extensive system of fortifications.
The Ukrainian counter-offensive has begun in several directions: in the south of Donbas, in the western part of Zaporizhzhia region. The Ukrainians even managed to break the first line for a while, but then the Russians regained briefly the lost positions. The AFU lost some Western heavy weapons systems for nothing: Leopard 2A6 and M2 Bradley.
The Russian army is well prepared, having created a fortified defensive line packed with engineering structures, men, weapons and equipment. In addition, Russia dominates the air, so Ukrainian ground forces are vulnerable to Russian aviation. Thus, already in the initial stages of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, it is clear that Ukraine is dealing with a truly professional Russian army.
