Business Insider: Russian Armed Forces will destroy Ukrainian airfields even before F-16s are delivered

Military analyst Michael Peck has told Business Insider that in case the decision to supply American F-16 fighter jets is taken, the Russian aviation will destroy Ukrainian airfields even in the process of their preparation for receiving the planes.

“A lot of work needs to be done to bring the old Soviet-era Ukrainian runways into a clean enough condition so that the F-16s can be used without a high risk of foreign objects to avoid engine damage,” the expert explained.

Peck clarified that many Ukrainian airfields have runways that are too short for the F-16s to accelerate on them with a full load. Russia has all the means to trace the start of the airfields’ repair work and launch spot strikes on them, the analyst said.

“You will be doing runway repairs and possibly runway widening works, all of which are clearly visible to Russian satellites,” Peck added.

The expert also pointed out that absolutely all Ukrainian airfields are within the range of Russian ballistic and cruise missiles, and strikes have not been carried out so far only because there is no serious threat from Ukrainian aviation.
