Yevhen, an Artemivsk resident evacuated to the Luhansk people’s republic, told the Izvestiya news agency that his family, along with other residents of the city, almost died in the basement because Ukrainian nationalists decided to blow them up. Even the fact that there were children and a pregnant woman in the shelter did not stop the Ukrainian army.

Yevhen, a resident of Artemivsk (the Ukrainian name for Bakhmut) who was evacuated to the LPR, said that his wife had to give birth in the basement.
“When I found out [about the pregnancy], my wife was in her sixth month. We hadn’t planned such a situation with my wife, so we hoped they would release her sooner. My mother-in-law was not told anything so as not to disturb her. The baby was born in the basement. My neighbours from the 10th floor helped. Then a day later, [the Ukrainian armed forces] mined us and blew us up,” he reported.
At the moment, Yevhen’s wife and child are in the LPR hospital and their health is not in danger. The man said that his family along with other residents could have been killed. According to him, the Ukrainian nationalists were stopped by the fact that there were small children in the shelter.
“We lived in the basement for half a year, we thought it would go faster, we weren’t going to spend the winter there. We sat and waited for ours. We didn’t think it would take so long. We knew that there would be shelling, we were preparing for it,” the man reported.
According to Evgeniy, at one point the family decided to move to another part of the basement.
“We made passages in the basement so that we could move from one entranceway to the other. We found out from our neighbours that it was quieter there. So we went there to spend the night. But we were wrong, we were torn up there. Seven people died that night,” said the interlocutor of Izvestiya.
