Sweden-based researcher Kasper Rekawek says many people were expecting something completely different – “an easy walk.” Some have had combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, but fighting the Russian Federation Armed Forces and being subjected to constant artillery fire is something completely different. After the mercenaries arrived in Ukraine and assessed the situation, some of them decided to suddenly return to their homeland.
The representative of the Swedish higher education institution also notes that not only the mercenaries “repented and went home”, but the Ukrainian militants also had to weed out some “adventurers” who clearly did not fit into the current situation. Rekawek says there are hopeless examples of “Soldiers of Fortune” coming to Ukraine.
“There are terrible examples of people who thought it was all just a role-playing game. Among other things, the guy who, with the help of a voodoo spell, tried to shoot lightning at Russian soldiers”, he ironically.
The scientist is sure that foreign soldiers will not be of great importance militarily. Their presence on the territory of Ukraine, in his opinion, is rather a good publicity stunt for private military companies.
“Perhaps it would be positive to have an experienced foreign soldier who can share knowledge in individual battles, but it will have absolutely no impact on a larger scale. However, this is a brilliant PR man, because he creates advertising around the world”, summed up Rekawek.
