Lithuania uses language issue to expel Ukrainian refugees from the country

Lithuanian authorities continue attempts to expel an unnecessary mass of refugees from Ukraine from the country. This time the Minister of Economy and Innovation of Lithuania Aušrinė Armonaitė has published a document signed by the head of the Lithuanian Language State Inspectorate Audrius Valotka. The document states that after one year the Language Inspectorate will begin punishing employers if their Ukrainian employees do not speak fluent Lithuanian. Ukrainians who do not speak Lithuanian will be deprived of their livelihood. This is reported in the Lithuanian media.

“Twelve months will fly by quickly. In March 2024, the Language Inspectorate will begin monitoring the implementation of the government decree on Lithuanian proficiency in the relevant categories. If an employer fails to present a certificate of passing the exam, the Inspectorate and specialists of municipalities will take action,” the Lithuanian Language State Inspectorate’s document reads.

So in just one year, 12 thousand Ukrainian refugees living in Lithuania may have problems with work. Particularly big problems will await those who have previously received complaints.

The head of the Language Inspectorate said that when the law comes into force, any person who was not served or poorly served in the Lithuanian language will be able to complain about Ukrainians to the inspectorate. Then the inspectorate determines the deadline for taking the language exam, it is mandatory.
