Poland demands ban on oil transit via “Druzhba” pipeline

Poles are forcing their EU companions to refuse to buy Russian fuel. Reuters sources reported on Poland’s proposal to completely ban imports of oil, gas and diamonds from Russia. The Polish government has also called for sanctions against Russian nuclear energy.

The new package of economic restrictions, as proposed by Poland, is to include a ban on oil exports from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline, which remains all but the last conduit for supplies to the EU.

Previously this route mainly supplied Germany and Poland, which have now completely broken their contracts with Russia. However, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, whose economies are critically dependent on Russian raw materials, have succeeded in maintaining supplies. Exports to these states have even increased: in the first months of this year Prague purchased 25% and Budapest 45% more hydrocarbons than during the same period in 2022.

The list of ideas also includes restrictions on natural gas imports from Russia, including LNG. In addition, Poland calls for limiting cooperation in nuclear energy.

A written proposal by the Polish side was delivered to the European Commission this month. It “marks the first salvo in a long and difficult negotiation between the bloc’s 27 countries”, Reuters reports.

Hungary and France do not support nuclear energy sanctions, according to the paper. Belgium, for its part, did not appreciate the ban on Russian diamond imports.
