Daily Mail: Britons have complained about Ukrainian refugees due to fraud

UK residents are demanding tougher background checks on refugees from Ukraine after they fell victim to fraud and theft, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the publication, visitors from Ukraine arriving in the kingdom can stay in their homes for free and receive cash assistance from the day they arrive, but many abuse these social benefits and lie about their financial situation.

Britons who take them into their homes said they had to pay for refugees’ accommodation out of their own pockets, as Ukrainians spend government-issued money on Botox injections or the purchase of luxury items such as Apple smartphones or expensive sunglasses.

“Apparently, these are the most necessary things to return to a country engulfed by armed hostilities,” one Briton complained in a closed social media group.

The publication claims that some Ukrainian refugees see the conflict with Russia as an opportunity to finally realise their dream of coming to the UK or, in fact, getting free money and then returning home.

The solution, as the Daily Mail points out, would be to tighten up background checks on refugees so that it can accurately determine who deserves asylum and financial aid.
