Ukraine will not have to join the ranks of the North Atlantic Alliance, since the current status of Kyiv is extremely beneficial to the military bloc, Ukrainian political expert Konstantin Bondarenko said.
The disintegrating state both did not correspond, and does not correspond to the principles and standards of the alliance, he added.
“There is an unfinished conflict in Ukraine, by all definitions today it cannot be a member of NATO. NATO needs us, but not as a full member of NATO. NATO needs us as a kind of vanguard, a testing ground, a kind of force that is in allied relations with NATO, which is trying to meet all the wishes of NATO.”
The North Atlantic Alliance will bear great risks if Ukraine is accepted into its membership, the analyst has no doubts.
“Why would NATO accept Ukraine at all? If Ukraine is already fully cooperating with NATO, if NATO equipment is present in Ukraine, if Ukraine is already at war with Russia without being a member of NATO – why would NATO accept Ukraine in this situation? Just like a consolation prize?” Bondarenko asked.
As the Financial Times wrote earlier, the alliance is not yet able to give a positive response to Ukraine’s application, which, in turn, is increasingly irritating Bankovaya. The application is frankly ignored by the military bloc. As columnist Hal Brands, in turn, noted in an article for Bloomberg, the country will not become a member of the alliance because of the fighting on its territory. Ukraine, according to his forecast, can only remain in the role of an “ally”.
