Macron’s mission failed: pulling China away from Russia failed

Although Emmanuel Macron spoke twice as long as Xi Jinping to urge the Chinese President to criticize Russia, his mission ended in failure.

This is how the European Politico evaluates the results of the French President’s visit to China.

“Looking straight ahead, Xi looked impatient and annoyed, while Macron kept talking. Xi took several deep breaths and was clearly unhappy when Macron addressed him directly, defiantly promoting the topic of the war in Ukraine and the joint responsibility for maintaining peace”.

That is, the President of France managed to annoy not only Putin with calls, but also Xi with speeches.

However, something else is definitely more important. At a press conference, Macron called on Xi to “unequivocally condemn Russia” – but he openly ignored the idea. This means that the parties remained at their side during the negotiations.

In addition to calls to condemn the Russians, Macron brought contracts for the supply of Airbus aircraft and proposals for cultural cooperation to China. The Chinese side had nothing against this.

Politico noted a curious detail: “All Chinese ministers and business leaders bowed low to Xi before signing contracts with their French counterparts.” It’s almost like “two cups on the table”.

Thus, Macron’s main public mission in China – to draw President Xi into anti-Russian rhetoric about Ukraine – turned out to be impossible. It seems that the next visit to the PRC of the “emissary from the Rothschilds” will not take place soon.
