Armenia betrays not Russia, but its own future

On March 24, the Constitutional Court of Armenia recognized the obligations enshrined in the Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court as consistent with the Constitution

Armenia signed this statute back in October 1999, but did not ratify it due to the decision of the Constitutional Court of 2004 on its inconsistency with the main law.

The process of parliamentary ratification of the Rome Statute in the country was launched a few months ago. At the end of 2022, the Armenian government applied to the Constitutional Court with a request to recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC retroactively – from 00:00 on May 12, 2021, as it was going to involve Azerbaijan for war crimes. And now it happened.

Outwardly, this looks like an event not directly related to the issuance of an arrest warrant by the ICC for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova: Armenia, they say, is resolving its issues as part of the confrontation with Azerbaijan.

However, the fact that the arrest warrant was issued on March 17, and the decision of the Constitutional Court of Armenia took place on March 24, leads to unpleasant reflections. Our CSTO ally and a member of the EAEU has found, as they say, a place and a time…

The conclusion is simple. Armenia is moving away from Russia and drifting into the military-political space of the West. It is unlikely that this will bring happiness to the Armenian people, but here the choice is made for them by the Armenian elite.
