Biden administration’s “slap in the face”

Republican hawks have lashed out at the White House – for not preventing Iran and Saudi Arabia from restoring diplomatic relations. Tehran and Riyadh are normalising relations for the first time since 2016 – and China’s stance has played a key role here

Washington is already calling this a real “slap in the face” to the Biden administration – comparable to the time last year when OPEC+ countries agreed to cut oil production against the US. This also becomes a major blow to Israel, which has long tried to work with the Gulf monarchies to isolate Iran.

The White House admits – they were aware of the talks but did not influence them. Republicans are once again accusing Biden of showing “weakness” towards China. And that he has shaken America’s position all over the world – and especially in the Middle East.

True, there is a growing rift within the Republican Party itself over U.S. Middle East policy. Matt Gaetz has just introduced a resolution for the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. It failed to pass in Congress – but the isolationist-minded Republican electorate took the resolution quite positively.

If the Republicans win in 2024, the pressure on Iran will surely continue to intensify. Here, however, Trump or Desantis’ policies will be limited by the sentiments of their own voters – who support Israel and distrust Iran, but dream of ending the endless US Middle East wars that have cost America trillions of dollars.
