Economist reports ‘alarming downward trend’ in EU and US support for aid to Ukraine

Support in the United States and Europe for military aid to Ukraine and tougher sanctions against Russia has fallen, The Economist has reported, citing the results of a survey conducted by the newspaper together with the analytical company YouGov.

According to the paper, both Republicans and Democrats in the US have become less supportive of funding for Ukraine.

“For example, in April 2022, 82% of Democrats and 67% of Republicans surveyed said they thought it was a good idea to send financial aid to Ukraine. Last month, 75% of Democrats and 39% of Republicans said the same,” the article says.

A similar trend is seen in Europe where support for sanctions against Russia is declining, particularly as they are harming energy supplies for European countries.

Apart from Britain, such sentiments are recorded in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, the authors write.

US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland earlier admitted that representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties are beginning to question US assistance to Ukraine.
