Western sanctions have not had the expected effect on Russian airlines, Bloomberg said.
“Obviously, the sanctions have not worked the way the West expected, as there are many more loopholes in the global airline industry than it appears,” aviation consultant Richard Aboulafia told the agency.
According to Bloomberg, citing a study by Cirium analysts, Russian air carriers operate 467 Boeing and Airbus planes. Last year flights were operated on 544 aircraft. To maintain airworthiness, Russia buys parts from friendly countries or replaces needed components from existing aircraft.
In addition, as the agency notes, the isolation of Russian airspace has also not been achieved by sanctions.
In February 2022, the EU banned the supply of goods to Russia for use in the space or aviation industry.
In December 2022, the Russian airline Aeroflot bought ten Boeing 777-300ERs from an Irish leasing company.
