Japan’s Foreign Ministry said the G7 foreign ministers at their first meeting under Japan’s presidency agreed to continue aid to Ukraine, strengthen sanctions against Russia and call on third countries to stop aid to Moscow.
“The meeting participants agreed to maintain and strengthen sanctions against Russia and also agreed to call on third countries to stop providing aid to Russia,” TASS reports the text of the statement.
In addition, the G7 foreign ministers “agreed to continue active cooperation with Ukraine”, stressing their determination to continue assisting it.
Earlier, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU and the USA had started working out sanctions against Russia related to the Ukraine crisis in December 2021.
On 16 February, US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said that the West was discussing the fate of Russia’s frozen assets, including in the G7 format.
