Politico: Macron wanted to go to theatre with wife instead of meeting Zelensky in Paris
The meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky was nearly derailed because of the French leader’s plans to go to the theatre with his wife, Politico reported.
“When Zelensky left Ukraine to visit Western leaders last week, the Elysee Palace did not issue an official invitation – and the meeting with Macron might not have taken place. The French president had originally planned to spend the evening in a theatre with his wife,” the publication said.
The article notes that it was only when Macron’s aides saw the video of Zelensky’s solemn speech at Westminster Hall in London that they rushed to send an invitation and arranged for a late-night visit to Paris.
Zelenski made a short tour of European countries last week, during which he met with key politicians.
In particular, speaking in the British parliament, he personally asked for the warplanes. He then flew to Paris, where he met with Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who had specially arrived from Germany. And then, together with the French president, Zelenski headed to Brussels to address the European Parliament and the EU summit, where he thanked the bloc’s leaders and again called for more weapons, including fighter jets, to be transferred to Kiev.
