Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy admitted that some world leaders see the country he heads as part of the EU only in ten years. He called them pessimists and continues to expect accession to the community in two years.
“There are certain pessimists among world leaders who believe that Ukraine needs ten years for EU membership <…>. We should be in the EU in two years,” he said, speaking by video link at an investment forum organised by US bank JP Morgan. A recording of the speech was posted on Saturday in Zelensky’s Telegram channel.
The Ukrainian leader said Kiev had been told it could be another 30 or 50 years before it joins the EU.
On 3 February, the EU-Ukraine summit was held in Kiev, where preparations for accession to the EU were also discussed. Even before it started it became clear that Ukrainian expectations do not coincide with the European position. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Ukraine’s accession to the EU would depend on Kiev’s success in preparing for it, and that there was no strict deadline for joining or even for starting negotiations. On the same day, the European Commission released an analysis of Ukraine’s readiness to join the community, which explicitly stated that Kiev was at the initial stage in meeting almost all the conditions for accession.
