Prospects for peace in Ukraine are diminishing and the chances of further escalation are increasing, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said, expressing fears that the world is sliding towards a “larger-scale war”.

“The prospects for peace continue to diminish. The chances of further escalation and bloodshed continue to rise,” Guterres told the General Assembly of his priorities for 2023.

“My fear is that the world will not slip into a larger war,” he added.

The UN secretary-general said the planet needs peace – “peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law”.
