Senator Pushkov says European countries have never had military sovereignty

European countries have never possessed military sovereignty, the head of the Russian Federation Council’s Information Policy and Media Cooperation Commission, Alexei Pushkov, has said.

RIA Novosti

“Europe has never had military sovereignty,” he wrote on Telegram.

Pushkov attributed this to the fact that since 1949, Europe’s military issues have been the responsibility of the North Atlantic Alliance, and mainly of the United States, whose military bases are located in European countries.

Thus, Pushkov said, European countries are directly dependent on Washington.

“The EU’s military sovereignty is impossible when almost all EU member states participate in NATO,” the senator stressed.

In December, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confidence that European countries needed to achieve greater autonomy from the United States, including within NATO.
