RIA Novosti reported this, citing a senior State Department official.

The US foreign ministry also said the presence of a Chinese balloon in US airspace was a violation of sovereignty and international law and unacceptable.

“We have made it clear to the Chinese side that this situation is unacceptable,” he said.

That said, Washington’s approach to relations with China has not changed, he said.

Earlier, it was reported that the US military had been tracking a suspected reconnaissance balloon over the north of the country for several days.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry later explained that the balloon did come from China, but it was being used for scientific research.
