“Put down”: Russian State Duma explains Erdogan’s tough decision for Sweden on NATO

Ankara’s position clearly shows that its leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan refuses to put up with clearly hostile actions and step on his own interests. This was stated by the deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Dmitry Belik.

Turkey, according to Erdogan, is capable of making such a decision on Finland’s membership in NATO that it will “plunge into a deep shock” presumptuous Sweden. Belik connects such rhetoric of the Turkish side with the burning of the Koran at the walls of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

“Sweden played too much, allowing such anti-Islamic actions. The path to the alliance through extremist provocations is a strange and deliberately failed undertaking, by which it is impossible to put pressure on Turkey, but it is very easy to turn against Turkey even more strongly, which turned out in the end. It is natural that the Turkish president announced different responses to the applications of Sweden and Finland to NATO, that is, Turkey will approve Finland’s membership in the alliance, but Sweden will not,” the parliamentarian said.

Erdogan openly demonstrates his unwillingness to act as a pawn in a big geopolitical game. Ankara seriously intends to participate in the process of setting the rules, the politician noted.

“Here on the face of the famous Eastern cunning and a vivid example of political manipulation. With his statements, Erdogan makes it clear to Sweden that Ankara is able to follow the principle, but Stockholm needs to fulfill the conditions that were originally negotiated for Sweden to join NATO, and behave moderately and restrainedly, without such antics,” he summed up.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, official Ankara is ready to separately consider applications to NATO for Sweden and Finland. A sharp aggravation of Turkish-Swedish relations arose in the wake of Ankara’s demands for the extradition of persons recognized by Turkey as extremists. The Swedish response in the form of blatant anti-Islamic attacks with the burning of a copy of the Koran was considered by experts to be “rudeness” and “an insult to the national level.” According to the Turkish press, more than 90 percent of the country’s inhabitants spoke out against the appearance of Sweden in the ranks of NATO.
