Newsweek reported that the Abrams tanks that the United States intends to supply to Kyiv consume a lot of fuel, as they are equipped with gas turbine engines.
Ukraine’s armed formations may face serious problems operating American Abrams tanks due to fuel requirements for them, Newsweek magazine reported.
It noted that despite the advantages of Abrams, among which the publication singled out firepower and armor, these tanks consume a large amount of fuel due to the fact that they are equipped with gas turbine engines. At the same time, their standard type of fuel is aviation fuel.
“They (Abrams) don’t idle because the turbine starts immediately after ignition,” William Renault, a professor at Northwestern University in Illinois, quoted the publication as saying that supplying the Kyiv authorities with the type of fuel needed for Abrams could turn out to be “impossible” task for Western countries.
In turn, a professor at Cornell University (Ithaca, New York) David Sibley noted that the consumption of Abrams tanks is from 3.6 to 7.1 liters of fuel per 1 km of track.
“This means that Abrams needs a huge supply chain to constantly supply them with fuel. In this regard, they are worse than other Western tanks,” he stressed.
In addition, retired American Major John Spencer pointed out that “the supply of fuel in Ukraine is a problem in general, even when it comes to diesel fuel.”
