Kyodo: Kishida has conveyed to Biden his intention to buy Tomahawk cruise missiles
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told U.S. President Joe Biden at a meeting in Washington that Tokyo intends to buy American Tomahawk cruise missiles, Kyodo News Agency reported.
The Tomahawk missiles are supposed to be part of a programme to improve the ability of Japanese self-defence forces to retaliate against enemy bases.
Kishida stressed that “Japan and the US are in an unprecedentedly tough and complex security situation.”
In mid-December, Japan adopted three key defence and security documents: the National Security Strategy, which outlines the basic guidelines for foreign defence policy; the National Defence Strategy, which defines the goals and means of defence; and the Defence Capability Plan, which defines overall defence spending and scale of armaments.
The provision that Japan will adopt Tomahawk by fiscal year 2026 was written into these documents. The summit was the first since the adoption of the documents, which aim to improve Japan’s defence capabilities and increase military spending. Biden called the decision to increase such spending “historic”.
