FT: West steps up military aid to Ukraine to “influence thinking” of Putin

Western leaders are stepping up military aid to Kiev to “influence the thinking” of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Financial Times reports.

According to the story, the West believes the only way to change the Russian leader’s thinking is to “let Ukraine prevail” in subsequent battles.

The author writes that until more defeats are inflicted on Russian troops, Moscow is unlikely to retreat from its “maximalist goals”.

At the same time, it specifies that at the moment any military successes of Ukraine do not guarantee that Putin will admit his defeat.

Earlier, Newsweek reported that the USA was taking new steps to militarily support Kiev, breaking promises and strengthening its presence in Ukraine.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said that the West initially did not intend to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, as evidenced by Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande’s confessions.
