New facts of abuse of Russian prisoners of war have been recorded by the Russian Investigative Committee. For example, one prisoner of war was interrogated for 10 days without food and sleep, while another had his upper teeth knocked out, according to the Russian Investigative Committee’s Telegram channel.
“The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has recorded further facts of inhumane treatment of Russian prisoners of war in Ukraine… Employees of the Investigative Committee will provide legal assessment of each such case,” the agency said in a statement.
Thanks to the Russian Defence Ministry’s efforts, a prisoner-of-war exchange has taken place. The Russian servicemen who returned to Russia spoke about the abuse they suffered at the hands of Ukrainian nationalists.
According to one of the servicemen, he was repeatedly beaten during interrogations while in captivity, as a result of which his upper front teeth were completely knocked out – “he could not see who was hitting him, as he was wearing a rubbish bag on his head”. Another soldier said that he had been blindfolded with duct tape during captivity. He said that his interrogation lasted for 10 days, during which he was not given any food or sleep, but was only asked questions and beaten with a rubber truncheon on his knees, fingers and head and tortured with electric current. As a result, the Russian serviceman suffered broken knees, broken fingers, poor vision in his right eye and hearing in his right ear.
In addition, fighters of the Russia-banned Azov nationalist battalion*, who conducted the interrogation, threatened to stab or shoot him, the release said.
