NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg says arms deliveries to Ukraine bring closer to end of conflict
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that arms deliveries to Ukraine bring closer the end of the armed conflict because they strengthen Kiev’s negotiating position.
“It is impossible to say when and how the war in Ukraine will end. But we know that most wars end at the negotiating table… So if we want a negotiated peaceful solution that allows Ukraine to persist as an independent and democratic country in Europe, the fastest way to do so is to support Ukraine. In fact, weapons are the way to peace,” the NATO secretary-general said at a conference in Norway.
The text of his speech was disseminated by the alliance’s press service.
Russia earlier sent a note to NATO countries over arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that any cargo containing arms for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia.
The Russian foreign ministry said that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitriy Peskov said that pumping weapons into Ukraine from the West did not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian talks and would have a negative effect.
