North Korea may have 15-60 nuclear warheads, media reports say

North Korea may have between 15 and 60 nuclear warheads, South Korea’s Ryonhap news agency reported citing foreign experts.

According to the American magazine Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS), as of September North Korea is believed to have 20-30 nuclear warheads suitable for medium-range missiles. For its part, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported last June that North Korea had 20 charges. The country has materials, namely uranium-235 and plutonium-239, which could make 45-55 more warheads.

Japanese experts from the Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (RECNA) said in a report on nuclear materials in the world for 2022 that the DPRK has 40 charges as of June. At the same time, the US Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) at the US National Defence Institute said Pyongyang had 15-60 warheads as of November 2020.

Earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the sixth plenum of the Eighth TPC called for strengthening the country’s nuclear forces and increasing the mass production of nuclear warheads. In addition, he said a new intercontinental ballistic missile system capable of instant counter-strike is needed, as well as the rapid completion of a reconnaissance satellite project and a launch vehicle for it. The DPRK leader noted that the situation where “South Korean puppets” have apparently become the enemy of North Korea requires increasing the number of nuclear warheads in the country’s weapons “exponentially”, and stressed the importance and need for mass production of tactical nuclear weapons.
