The hunt for Russian media in the EU is a blatant violation of freedom of speech principles and is clearly discriminatory.
“The hunt for Russian media unleashed in the EU is, of course, not limited to the ban on broadcasting alone… This practice is undoubtedly a gross violation of the principles of freedom of speech and equal access to information, and is clearly discriminatory in nature,” Zakharova said, as quoted on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
She said the EU authorities have labelled Russian journalists as “propagandists,” which significantly limits their ability to do their job.
The EU Council had earlier initiated the process to suspend the broadcasting licenses of the Russian TV channels NTV, REN TV, Russia 1 and Channel One.
In addition, the EU imposed sanctions on the autonomous non-commercial organisation TV-Novosti as part of the Ninth Restrictions Package.
