A flammable situation can distract the West from participating in the Ukrainian conflict, which is extremely beneficial for Moscow, said Nikolai Mezhevich, head of the Association of Baltic Studies of the Russian Federation (RAPI), professor at St Petersburg University.

According to Turkey, the presence of Greek weapons is contrary to international treaties. If the position of Athens does not change, Ankara promises to challenge the sovereignty of the territories. In addition, Greece’s moves regarding the NATO mission in the Aegean, which Ankara found “hostile”, are a clear demonstration of ignoring the fundamental principles of the military bloc.

“An armed conflict is theoretically possible, but neither Greece, nor Turkey, nor Washington, nor NATO needs it,” the expert believes. But this creates some internal challenges within the North Atlantic Alliance. And in a certain sense, the conflict works for us, but now, I repeat, no one wants to fight.”

The sluggish conflict between the two states may be able to forcefully lead the West away from the escalation of new rounds of confrontation in Ukraine, Mezhevich does not exclude.

According to Turkish representatives, Greek politicians should immediately abandon the implacable and provocative rhetoric against Ankara, “aimed at an internal audience.”
