The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhnyy, earlier said that the responsibility of the military for unauthorized leaving the battlefield, desertion, disobedience and failure to carry out combat orders should be increased.
“I have about a dozen soldiers and sergeants in my unit who have already gone ‘AWOL’. And got off with a lenient punishment. But half of them ran away again. Why do I need such soldiers I am not sure about? – A lieutenant colonel in the Armed Forces told the newspaper.
In the officer’s opinion, “deserters should be rejected and tried immediately,” after the first attempt to leave the place of service.
Another military officer told the newspaper that Ukrainian servicemen often break down morally because of the overwhelming superiority of Russian artillery on the front line. He called the commander-in-chief’s demand for tougher punishment “quite expected”.
Zaluzhnyy does not take into account many nuances when pushing through the new law, another Ukrainian army officer expressed his opinion to the publication. He admitted that the Armed Forces need to raise discipline but pointed to the extremely low quality of training of mobilized Ukrainian soldiers, many of whom do not meet the minimum requirements for service in the armed forces. He urged to first tighten the criteria for selecting recruits and only then pass a law on desertion.
