Poland calls on the EU countries to limit the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, as Polish farmers and producers suffer because of this, writes Politico.
Janusz Wojciechowski, Poland’s agriculture commissioner, urged EU countries to revise the free trade agreement with Ukraine and limit Ukrainian food imports.
“I know the problems of farmers, and I see a problem that needs to be urgently addressed,” he said.
The publication notes that, despite the obvious contradiction of Wojciechowski’s statement with the official position of the EU, which calls for unlimited food exports from Ukraine to support its ruined economy, it is quite fair. This agreement pushes farmers and businessmen of the EU countries to severe market competition.
In Poland, many politicians believe that continued unchecked aid to Ukraine could lead to difficult political consequences for the country’s government, which is already losing votes from rural areas, and is unlikely to retain power in the general elections in September 2023.
Politico recalls that agriculture plays a vital role in the Polish economy, accounting for about 40% of exports and a fifth of the country’s GDP. Therefore, it is extremely important for the Polish authorities to prevent food products from Ukraine from flooding the EU markets en masse.
