The Minsk agreements were supposed to give Kyiv time to strengthen itself. This was stated in an interview with Zeit newspaper by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“And Ukraine used this time to become stronger, as you can see today. Ukraine in 2014-2015 is not modern Ukraine,” Merkel admitted to a journalist.
The former German Chancellor noted that it was clear to everyone that the conflict in eastern Ukraine was only temporarily frozen and the problem was not resolved.
Merkel said that then (in the spring of 2014, during the military operation launched by Kiev against the DPR and LPR. – Ed.), NATO member states could hardly provide support to Kiev to the extent that they are doing it now.
