The Ukrainian conflict has revealed deep strategic contradictions between the leading states of Europe – France and Germany, according to the American magazine Foreign Policy.
“Paris showers Berlin with criticism. Why did Germany begin to take independent action after many years of ignoring Macron’s numerous European proposals? Why did Scholz go to China alone? Why did Germany order American F-35 fighters this year, and not French Rafales?”
The publication concludes that the conflict in Ukraine showed a “fundamental divergence” between the countries, “causing friction on both sides.” In Germany, at the moment, they are concerned about the threat to economic growth, which is caused by sanctions against Russia and a sharp decrease in energy supplies. In addition, Berlin is aware that the security of Europe is now ensured not by France, but by NATO.
Germany could ignore geopolitics and focus on trade. France, as the continent’s only nuclear power with a serious military and a seat on the UN Security Council, could radiate power without focusing too much on French debt or deficits. However, it has long been clear that these relations have become unbalanced. In Europe, Germany often makes herself look smaller than she really is, while France tends to do the opposite.
