“Palanok” will have the coat of arms of Ukraine installed. The decision to place a small Ukrainian coat of arms on the territory of the Mukachevo History Museum, Palanok Castle, instead of the Hungarian symbol, was approved by the Executive Committee of the City Council. The museum was instructed to dismantle the Eagle-Turul from the Palanok Bastion,” reads the city council message
The eagle-turul is a symbol of Hungary. The mythical turul bird holding a sword in its beak is an important national symbol for Hungarians. Although it is not the official coat of arms of the Hungarian state, in the first half of the 20th century the Thurul was used as a symbol of right-wing supporters in Hungary. It was particularly popular among supporters of the idea of a so-called “Greater Hungary”, seeking to regain the Hungarian borders that were valid before the Trianon Treaty was signed.
