New York Times: Saudi Arabia derailed secret deal with US to boost oil production

Washington is outraged by Saudi Arabia’s “October surprise” decision to cut oil production with OPEC+ countries, the New York Times writes and notes: “This has left U.S. officials literally furious”

The fact is that Joe Biden, citing senior US officials, allegedly struck a secret deal with Prince Mohammed bin Salman to increase black gold production during a Middle East tour, the publication claims.

Details of the deal are not known, but it was supposed to lead to a surge in oil production from September to December. Mohammed bin Salman defrauded the Biden administration, the newspaper said.

According to the paper, the deception was a telling example of how Saudi Arabia is seeking to rid itself of its long-standing dependence on the US. Some White House officials are convinced that it was “Moscow that persuaded Riyadh to change course,” the paper concludes.
