German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier canceled his visit to Kyiv, scheduled for October 20, due to security concerns. This was reported by the German edition of Bild.
The newspaper found out that Steinmeier’s trip to the Ukrainian capital was coordinated within a few weeks. However, according to Bild, the President’s office explained the cancellation of the visit for “security reasons.” In Kyiv, this decision caused “displeasure and irritation,” the newspaper notes.
“While the federal president is canceling his visit, there are many foreign diplomats and guests who want to be in the [Ukrainian] capital right now,” a Ukrainian government source told Bild. According to the newspaper, on Wednesday the head of the Greek Foreign Ministry visited Kyiv.
Bild writes that the Interior Ministry, security agencies and the German Foreign Ministry recommended Steinmeier not to visit Kyiv. The decision to cancel the visit was made on Tuesday.
