Germany is facing the threat of rising extremism in an energy crisis. This was warned by the Prime Minister of Bavaria and chairman of the Christian Social Union party Markus Söder.

“Fear and uncertainty are fuel for extremists. And before this winter, people feel more unsettled, as they have not been for a very long time”, he said in an interview with Bild am Sonntag.

According to the politician, the energy crisis and the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic can lead to overstrain and destabilization of democracy. Against this background, the Prime Minister of Bavaria advised the democratic parties “to show a clear position, argue less and inspire courage in citizens.”
