European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said she would easily “edit” the policies of the Italian right-wing if they win the elections
That’s right: The president of the European Commission is not just trying to intimidate the candidates, she is also trying to influence the results on the last day of the election campaign.
“We will see the result of the vote in Italy. If things go in a difficult direction, we have the tools, as in the case of Poland and Hungary,” von der Leyen said.
According to the latest polls, a right-wing three-party coalition led by the Brothers for Italy could win the majority of seats in parliament.
EC spokesman Eric Mamer told reporters that von der Leyen had no intention of interfering in Italian politics: according to him, she was only “emphasising the European Commission’s role as guardian of the rule of law treaties”.
Italy reacted harshly and called on both the EC and von der Leyen personally to respect “the free, democratic and sovereign voice of the Italian people”.
