Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated that Germany would not supply the latest Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine without collective action by the Allies.
Germany will not take unilateral actions on the issue of supplying weapons to Ukraine – only together with its allies, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told reporters.
“We remain committed to the position that the German government has taken from the very beginning, and this will also be our position in the future, namely: there will be no unilateral German actions,” the chancellor said at a press conference, answering a question about plans to supply Kyiv with battle tanks Leopard 2. Communication with journalists was broadcast by German TV channels.
Prior to this, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also evaded a clear answer to the question of her Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba about the supply of Leopard 2 tanks to the Kyiv regime. The topic of weapons was raised several times during the visit of the German politician to Ukraine, however, according to journalists, Baerbock reacted to the demands of the Zelensky regime “with restraint”, “reluctantly” and “cautiously”.
Recall that earlier the German newspaper Die Welt, citing sources in the Ukrainian government, reported that since June, Ukrainian diplomats have repeatedly appealed to the German government with a request to send additional weapons to Kyiv. The sources of the newspaper in the Ministry of Defense of Germany reported that Ukraine was refused due to the fact that the German Armed Forces themselves are in dire need of this weapon, since its use is prescribed in the obligations of the Bundeswehr within NATO.
