The National Interest (NI) analyzed the current situation in the United States, comparing it with the one that developed on the eve of the civil war of 1861-1865.
The publication finds some similarities between the conditions before the Civil War and at the present time. Among them, the authors of the NI material include deep social contradictions, the preservation of a clear cultural stratification of society, as well as the growth of property differences between social groups, which was clearly expressed against the background of record inflation and fuel prices. The publication warns the US government against the danger of a national split, which may be led by representatives of radical circles in the US.
“If — still a big if — large-scale anti-government violence breaks out as a result of a triggering event, then it is more likely to take place in loosely coordinated pockets, say, hundreds of heavily armed and angry people led by one [man – Ed.] or a paramilitary group. It would be very dangerous if he was supported by some extremist national leaders,” the author writes.
The core of the mutiny will be extremely well armed with standard combat weaponry and explosives, according to the material. The likelihood of widespread violence today is undeniable. The storming of the Capitol by supporters of the 45th US President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021 may turn out to be a rehearsal for coordinated attacks on federal symbols and property, state capitals and more. If such violence breaks out, these groups will need to be disarmed, if necessary, with the participation of the army, writes NI.
The conclusion states that while a civil war in the United States is unlikely today, geographically dispersed, loosely coordinated paramilitary violence by far-right and radical social elements cannot be considered impossible.
