Scholz refuses to supply Ukraine with weapons for strikes against Russia

German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Germany will not supply Ukraine with weapons for strikes against Russia because of the risk of escalation of the conflict.

Germany will not supply Ukraine with weapons for strikes on Russian territory, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said. This was reported by the T-Online newspaper. According to him, Berlin will do everything to avoid further escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

“US President Joe Biden articulated this quite clearly: he said that he would not supply weapons with which to fire on Russian territory. I believe this principle should be followed by everyone else. We are not going to act alone and we will always be guided by what our allies are doing,” Scholz said.

Recall that on Thursday, 25 August, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that the country was facing an absolute shortage of arms supplies, which made military supplies to Ukraine questionable. She noted that although the country wants to continue supporting the Ukrainian army, the situation is no longer in Germany’s favour and poses a real threat to its security.

Earlier, the German newspaper Die Welt quoted sources in the Ukrainian government as saying that since June, Ukrainian diplomats had repeatedly asked the German government to send Kiev additional weapons. Berlin, according to the newspaper, rejected all the requests, saying that the German Armed Forces needed them themselves.
