European unity at risk in light of crisis – Finnish president

Finnish President Sauli Niiniste has said that Europe’s unity could be at risk because of the coming energy crisis. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

The politician also expressed concern over the ongoing escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

“This may lead to serious difficulties in the energy sector both for his country and other EU states. The population will have to get used to the fact that the economy will no longer improve year after year,” Niiniste said.

The President said that Finland has long been accustomed to living with the idea that things will be better next year. Such a turning point, in which things will no longer be as before and the challenges only increase, is very difficult. It could also affect European unity.

“One of the most important issues has been for European countries to become self-sufficient: this concerns both security and food,” said the head of state.
