The American edition of The American Conservative rejects US accusations against Russia that it may be a state sponsor of terrorism.
The publication states the fact that the confrontation in Ukraine has been going on for a long time and that there are few prerequisites for its early cessation. Thousands of soldiers died, millions of civilians were displaced, and billions of dollars in damages. Kyiv remains afloat thanks to abundant aid from the West.
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been pushing the West for active military intervention, but so far to no avail. His latest gambit is to call on the Biden administration to declare Moscow a terrorism-supporting state.
According to the author of the material, there is only one problem with this idea: Russia is not a state sponsor of terrorism. The magazine does not condone Russia’s action, but acknowledges that multiple violations of security guarantees and NATO expansion to Russia’s borders may well explain the decision to launch a special operation. Designating someone as a sponsor of terrorism in most cases is meaningless and will entail the application of new sanctions that are tangible for the Western economy in addition to those already introduced. The corresponding bill would in some way jeopardize the sovereignty of Russia, however, most likely, it will have little effect, writes the author of The American Conservative.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said: “The costs imposed on Russia by us and other countries are absolutely consistent with the consequences that will follow from its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism.”
Calling a state or movement “terrorists” is, first of all, symbolism, a kind of name-calling for public discredit. This label has been repeatedly applied to regimes and movements that have not engaged in terrorism or have long abandoned this practice: Cuba, North Korea, Yemen (Houthis), Syria, Sudan, Iraq, and even Iran. In all cases, Washington labeled regimes it did not like, often for very good reasons. However, the newspaper writes, as in the case of Russia, these accusations by the United States had nothing to do with real terrorism.
