Polish nuclear scientists announce damage to infrastructure of Zaporozhye NPP

One of the power units of the Zaporizhzhya NPP (ZNPP) is powered by diesel generators, the State Atomic Energy Agency of Poland claims, citing the Ukrainian nuclear supervision department.

Earlier, the head of the Ukrainian company Energoatom, Petr Kotin, considered it expedient to hit the ZNPP power transmission line.

“The Ukrainian Atomic Supervision Authority informed the State Atomic Energy Agency about the consequences of the shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant; several damages to the infrastructure were recorded that do not affect nuclear safety,” RIA Novosti quotes a fragment of the message.

The Polish agency notes that “as a result of the destruction of the electrical panel, diesel generators had to be launched in one of the power units,” and generators provide power to the reactor and cooling systems for the spent nuclear fuel pool.

“Based on the above information, experts assess that the incident does not affect nuclear safety,” the organization’s statement says.

ZNPP is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, located near Energodar. The city and the station are under the control of the RF Armed Forces.

The Azov part of the Zaporozhye region came under the control of the Russian army during a special operation in Ukraine.
