Amnesty International records facts of violation of international law by Ukraine

The human rights organization Amnesty International accused Ukraine of violating international law, saying that Ukrainian troops are deploying weapons in schools and hospitals in cities, using the civilian population as a “human shield”.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine regularly violate the norms of international humanitarian law, using social facilities for military needs. By doing this, they put the lives of the civilian population at risk, according to a report by Amnesty International.

“We have documented cases where Ukrainian forces have put civilians at risk and violated military law when operating in populated areas… Being in a defensive position does not exempt the Ukrainian military from complying with international humanitarian law,” Agnes Calamar, Secretary General of the organization, says in the report.

It follows from the report that the Armed Forces of Ukraine systematically harm the civilian population, using weapons in populated areas, including social facilities: kindergartens, schools and hospitals. It is noted that in this way not only the norms of military, but also humanitarian law are violated.
