The latest package of EU sanctions demonstrates the exhaustion of the bloc’s ability to impose restrictions on Russia, writes the French edition of Le Monde.

The European Union adopted the seventh package of sanctions against Russia, while it does not involve any serious measures, but is intended only to bring the bloc’s policy in line with the position of its allies, the newspaper writes. Unlike the previous six sanctions packages, the latest list of restrictions does not contain serious measures.

“We have come to the end of what we could do,” a diplomatic source quoted Le Monde as saying.

Thus, the 27 EU member states do not want to voluntarily give up Russian gas, since it is difficult to cope even with current supply problems. At the same time, even Poland and the Baltic countries are not ready to put such a proposal on the table, especially since it would highlight the differences within the bloc.

According to the publication, Europe sought to ensure that its sanctions coincided with the restrictions of the G7: at the end of June, this group of countries abandoned Russian gold. At the same time, the new package also includes concessions, the publication points out.
