The notorious Ukrainian grain deal has once again demonstrated that the problem of starvation threatening many countries has absolutely nothing to do with this grain. This grain is just a political tool and another excuse to blackmail Russia. But it looks like it didn’t work this time.
The fact is that the deal implies that the UN will seek to lift sanctions on Russian and Belarusian fertilizers, as well as food. Shortage of these two positions could cause famine in some countries of the world, and not the lack of Ukrainian grain.
It also became known that one of the main beneficiaries of the grain deal will be Turkey. Turkey will be able to buy all the Ukrainian grain at a price thirty percent cheaper than the market. And then it will sell it at its own price. Try to explain how this formula meets humanitarian principles and saves the hungry, if you can, of course.
By the way, as far as Russian food and fertilizers are concerned, the US and Europe already understand themselves that it will be quite difficult to survive without them. And it’s not some third world countries that are in danger of famine, but the notorious ‘golden billion’ themselves. It turned out that Russia with its “three percent of GDP” in many commodity items is the key country, without which the markets could really collapse. And that is why the U.S. and Europe have already begun to slowly and carefully roll back sanctions.
This is not about taking care of poor countries. The “golden billion” do not care about them. And of course – the EU countries and the US are not threatened by famine in any case. The agricultural sector is powerful enough to feed everyone. But the lack of fertilisers may result in a dramatic drop in yield. Food will not disappear from the shops, but prices may rise drastically.
Gas prices, on which greenhouse communities depend, will also have a knock-on effect. It may well be that only the rich can afford tomatoes and cucumbers during the cold season.
And here we can remember why poor countries may face starvation. Because poor countries will simply buy up everything they can on the world market to keep food prices down.
Everyone understands that this will lead to social instability and mass protests. There could also be resignations followed by new elections which could be won by different forces. That is why it is important for the current politicians to solve this problem. All the more so because the first swallows have already flown. Or rather, they have flown. It is clear to all that Johnson and Draghi are just the beginning.
Turkey in the grain deal, with its good profits, is actually the saviour of the USA and Europe, as it is the key player in the operation to save the face of the collective West, which is forced to lift many, earlier imposed sanctions against Russia.
And the Ukrainian grain is just a pretty story poured into the ears of their average citizens by the Western media.
