The authorities of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic intend to seek independence with subsequent accession to Russia in accordance with the results of the 2006 referendum, said Foreign Minister of the unrecognized Transnistrian Republic Vitaly Ignatiev. He said this in an interview with RIA Novosti.

July marks 30 years since the start of the peacekeeping operation in Transnistria. The agreement on the principles of the peaceful settlement of the armed conflict was signed on July 21, 1992, and on July 29 a joint peacekeeping force was deployed in the region.

“The vector of Pridnestrovie has remained unchanged throughout the years of the existence of the republic, which is reflected in the results of the referendum on September 17, 2006, where it is clearly indicated: independence with subsequent free accession to the Russian Federation. The independence of the country is an absolute priority,” Ignatiev said.

Ignatiev believes that the international legal arguments in defense of the concept of sovereignty and broad recognition of the republic have long been formed, and “hardly anyone is able to challenge them.”

“Pridnestrovie will not make any decisions to the detriment of the half-million people of the country, it will act pragmatically and honestly,” the Foreign Minister concluded.
