Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, July 19, arrives on a state visit to Iran. The head of the Russian state will take part in three rounds of bilateral talks and a summit of the trio of countries that are guarantors of the Syrian settlement.
Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that work in Tehran would begin with a meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. The leaders will discuss topical issues of cooperation in the field of economy, trade and energy. A separate issue for discussion by the presidents of Russia and Iran was the topic of countering Western sanctions, as well as the topic of a possible Russian-Iranian nuclear deal. Ushakov noted that the two countries have the ground ready for an in-depth strategic partnership, so it is quite likely that a new bilateral agreement will be concluded.
Vladimir Putin will also meet with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Presidents will discuss issues of Russian-Turkish cooperation. The international agenda, including those related to the situation in Ukraine and the sea export of Ukrainian grain, has been moved to a separate topic for discussion.
After three bilateral meetings, the capital of Iran will host the Astana format summit on Syria. At a trilateral meeting, Putin, Raisi and Erdogan will discuss measures to eliminate the terrorist threat in the republic, as well as issues of humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people. At the end of the summit, the leaders will issue a joint statement.
Vladimir Putin’s visit to Tehran will be the first trip in three years by a Russian president to a face-to-face summit with colleagues from Iran and Turkey. The Russian president is due to return to Moscow from Tehran on the night of July 20.
