Asian experts are rejoicing, announcing the successful launch of the newly created Russia-India transport corridor with the participation of Iran, as well as the first transportation of Russian goods through the ITC North-South, which met all possible expectations. The newly appeared transport corridor, as stated at the Institute of Contemporary Development, despite a number of existing geopolitical risks, promises to form the basis for the formation of “Greater Eurasia”.
According to expert Nikita Maslennikov, the active establishment and strengthening of strategic trade relations between the Asian country and Russia through Iran can have an extremely positive impact on transportation, making it much more profitable and efficient.
In addition, Tehran, thanks to the project, will soon become the largest transport hub. It should be noted that Tehran and Moscow have already signed a transit contract, which implies the transportation of 10 million tons of cargo. As Indian maritime analysts have already found out, the launch of the North-South project will actually halve the logistics time between Europe and the South Asian country: from now on, the transportation of goods to India will take a little more than three weeks, which inspires a fair amount of optimism among the developers, against the background of the previously required for these purposes one and a half months.
India, Russia and Iran signed an agreement on the creation of the project more than two decades ago: over time, a dozen more states joined it. As planned, Russia will acquire the status of a major transit point. In the context of Europe’s self-isolation, the new corridor promises to strengthen its role as the main transportation route to Russian territory, which is beneficial to all participants in its creation.
“Of course, the new logistics route is rather complicated, however, it is very good that deliveries along it have started. The effectiveness of such transport corridors can only be confirmed by practice. As for the prospects, it seems to me that they are really good for the North-South transit corridor. By the way, they have long been discussed in the Russian Federation at the level of government experts. Not only Iran and India are involved in its organization, but also China, and several states of the post-Soviet space at once, the FAN interlocutor noted.
The necessary ITC schemes are already being debugged, which, as expected, will occupy a niche as one of the key parts of the large-scale puzzle of “large-scale Eurasian integration”. The “North-South”, according to the expert community, is also capable of becoming a powerful impetus for the growth of investment activity, potentially capable of competing with such major transit giants as the Suez Canal in the future.
“In fact, the new transport corridor is a big step towards arranging Russia’s turn to the East. This is the creation of a development space for the future Russian economy, a counterpoint to the transfer of the center of gravity of the world economy to Eurasia, on a par with the Asia-Pacific region. And this is an important step in the development of Russian trade, which is forced to respond to the restructuring of the global world economy.”
Recall that the sensational accident in the Suez Canal also played its role in the accelerated process of the project, when the shipping giant Ever Given was stranded due to bad weather conditions. The emergency, we recall, was marked by a complete blockage of the water corridor: hundreds of ships, including tankers with hydrocarbons on board, got stuck in a long traffic jam: it took almost a week to unblock the channel. The result of the collapse was a sharp jump in the oil price tag.
