Pope Francis called for a rethinking of the concept of “just war” in the context of modern conflicts.
“The time has come to rethink the concept of “just war”. A just war is possible, there is a right to be protected, but the way this concept is used today needs to be rethought,” he said in an interview with the Argentine Telam agency, which was published on Friday.
“I have already said that the use and possession of nuclear weapons is immoral. To resolve issues by war means to give up the ability to conduct a dialogue, to be constructive, which people have”, the pontiff believes.
According to the pontiff, in the world “there is a whole structure for the sale of weapons, which contributes” to the unleashing of wars.
“I don’t remember the exact numbers, but a statistician told me that if weapons were not produced for one year, there would be no famine in the world,” Pope Francis added.
